:: The University of the Azores

The University of the Azores opened on 9^th January, 1976 in the aftermath of the Portuguese Revolution of 1974 and before the institutionalization of the Autonomous Region, although under the denomination of University Institute of the Azores. After only a quarter of a century of activity, the University has grown according to the local development projection, which is largely responsible for the transformation of the face of the islands.

It is our duty at the University of the Azores to promote the specific knowledge that establishes a link between the nature of the Institution and the character of the Region, an imperative for the success of the academy and the community. It is also our duty at the University of the Azores to promote universal knowledge, in accordance with the declaration of Bologna that strives for the creation of a European Higher Education area.
